The Centre has decided to go ahead with continuing its flagship scheme for women safety till 2025-26, with an approval of Rs 1,179.72 crore. This decision was taken by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday night, to check crimes committed against women in the country.
In times of advanced technologies and rapid urbanization, women in India are still living in fear of violence and discrimination. Although heart-rendering, it is a harsh fact that approximately 88 rape cases are reported every day in the country. What is even more surprising is that we are far away from actual figures due to 100+ cases that go unnoticed. It is heartbreaking to watch our rich culture and value system failing to guard the creator of this universe. All these years, women have continued to be objectified by our patriarchal system; purely as machines making machines, restricted to the idea of marriage and a restrictive household system.
India is a country where women are worshipped as Goddesses and ironically so, the country has also become a hub of alarming atrocities against these women. Local police stations overflow with FIRs on issues like rape, eve-teasing, assaulting, domestic violence, dowry cases, child marriage, and many more. Although several women have been leading the world and succeeding in diverse fields, the brutal reality still reports 44% rise in cases of violence and brutality against women over the past 10 years. Remember, this data is just on records while the real picture shows numbers being sky-high.
From an adult to a 3-year-old girl, no female is 100% safe inside or outside the house. Inside the house, they become victims of domestic violence and outside, they are subjected to violence, be it in the workplace or in common areas like a hospital, streets or anywhere else!
The National Crime Records Bureau’s report of 2022 brings to light a total of 4,45,256 cases of crimes committed against women registered nationwide. This translates to nearly 51 FIRs every hour. Most of these crimes were categorized as cruelty by husbands or relatives. Delhi stands at the highest in terms of crimes against women, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
In line with these atrocities, the Government has also taken several initiatives regarding women safety in India. Some of these measures have been highlighted below:
A Nirbhaya Fund has been set up for building and making projects for the purpose of safety and security of women.
The MHA has launched an online analytic tool for the police under the name “Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences” to primarily monitor and track time-bound investigation in cases of sexual assault in accordance with Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2018.
The Emergency Response Support System provides a single emergency number (112), a computer-aided field resource dispatch to the distress location.
The government has sanctioned the Safe City Projects in phase I in 8 cities, namely, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Mumbai.
MHA has also set up a Women Safety Division to coordinate various initiatives for women safety.
The Government of India also conducts programs for generating awareness and several other publicity campaigns through workshops, cultural events, training programs, seminars, and advertisements in print and electronic media.
MHA has also attempted to strengthen DNA analysis units in Central and State Forensic Science Laboratories, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art DNA analysis unit in Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Chandigarh.
Women must be equipped with techniques of self-defense.
Sex education should become a part of every curriculum to make children aware of all sex-related crimes.
The media must commit to showing the actual reality and not be biased in its actions.
All laws and regulations related to crimes committed against women must be stricter and a speedy process must be followed.
The government must ensure 24-hour patrolling on roads to ensure women safety.
The body of volunteers must participate in collecting data and investigating the crime rate at ground level.
